Unparalleled Expertise in
Staining and Varnishing

Staining and varnishing are intricate processes that require a delicate touch and a comprehensive understanding of diverse wood types.

We pride ourselves on delivering finishes that enhance and protect the wood’s innate beauty, elevating every project into a piece of art.

Revitalising with Varnish

One of our most popular services is the application of a fresh coat of varnish over an existing one. This process begins with light sand buffing to create a smooth surface primed for applying our premium acrylic varnish.

This critical step ensures an evenly distributed, glossy finish revitalizes the wood, providing protection and aesthetic enhancement.

When the wood exhibits minor discoloration or chips, our skilled team applies a thin layer of stain before varnishing. This technique improves the appearance of the wood, preserving its integrity while masking minor imperfections.

The Beauty of Staining

Although staining is less frequently requested, we are fully equipped to stain new wood elements such as stairs, rails, and trims.

After diligently selecting the ideal stain to complement the desired aesthetic, our professionals apply it meticulously.

Once dry, we typically add a couple of varnish coats to seal and protect the stained surface, ensuring durability and longevity.

The Innovation of Polyshades

We employ a combined stain and urethane product known as Polyshades for surfaces exhibiting significant discoloration.

This product can be used to enhance or even alter the color of the surface.

However, it’s important to note that Polyshades may not provide optimal results on larger surfaces such as doors.

Staining of New Wood:
A Game Changer

Staining can significantly enhance new wood installations like doors, stairs, and trims.

We offer a broad spectrum of stain colors, enabling customization to individual tastes.

Staining, however, is only recommended for stain-grade wood products. Following staining, we typically apply at least two coats of varnish for optimum protection.

Frequently Asked Questions About Staining and varnishing

Varnish should be applied after staining. The stain penetrates into the wood to provide color, and the varnish is applied over the stain to protect and seal the wood.

The recommended time to wait between staining and varnishing can vary based on the specific products used and environmental conditions such as humidity and temperature. However, as a general rule, it's best to allow the stain to dry for 24 to 48 hours before applying varnish.

Yes, you can put varnish over stain. In fact, it's a standard process in woodworking. The stain gives the wood color, and the varnish provides a clear, protective layer over the stain that enhances the wood's durability and appearance.

The number of stain coats you should apply largely depends on the desired color depth and the type of stain being used. However, typically, one to two coats of stain are sufficient. More than two coats may not be absorbed into the wood, leading to a sticky finish.

If you apply varnish too soon, before the stain has completely dried, it can cause various problems. The stain may not adhere properly to the wood, resulting in an uneven finish. The varnish may also mix with the stain, altering the desired color. Additionally, it can lead to a tacky finish that doesn't fully harden, compromising the durability of the protective coating.
